해운대 바다 갤러리는 김명식 작가 초대전을 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 작가의 대표 연작인 East Side Story와 최근의 Countryside 시리즈를 중심으로, 오랜 시간 이어져 온 그의 예술 세계를 소개합니다.

대표작 East Side Story는 2004년 뉴욕 체류 시절의 경험에서 비롯되었습니다. 어느 날 전철 창밖으로 스쳐 지나가는 집들이 사람의 얼굴처럼 보였던 순간, 작가는 집을 인간 존재의 상징으로 바라보기 시작했습니다. 이후 화면 속 집들은 다양한 인종과 문화를 상징하며, 함께 살아가는 우리 이웃의 모습으로 확장되었습니다.

Centered on the artist's renowned East Side Story series and his recent Countryside works, this exhibition offers an opportunity to explore the artistic vision he has developed over decades of dedicated practice.

Born in Seoul in 1949, Kim Myung Sik has maintained an active international career for many years. Throughout his artistic journey, he has consistently explored human relationships, the coexistence of diverse cultures and identities, and the possibilities of harmony and hope within communities.

His signature East Side Story series originated during his stay in New York in 2004. One day, while riding a train, the houses passing by outside the window suddenly appeared to him as human faces. From that moment, the house became a symbol of human existence in his work. Over time, these houses evolved into metaphors for people of different races, cultures, and backgrounds living together as neighbors within a shared community.

The houses that populate Kim's paintings are not merely architectural forms but symbolic representations of community itself. Though similar in structure, each house is distinguished by its own color and character, reflecting the values of diversity, equality, difference, and coexistence. Rather than focusing on conflict, the artist emphasizes harmony over division and connection over separation, offering a warm and optimistic perspective on human society.

In his recent Countryside series, these concerns expand into the realm of nature and landscape. Rich green tones and increasingly liberated compositions reveal an artist who continues to seek new possibilities of expression while remaining deeply committed to his lifelong artistic inquiry.
