1949년 서울에서 태어난 김명식 작가는 중앙대학교 예술대학에서 미술학사(BFA)와 석사(MFA)를 마친 뒤 대학교수로 재직하며 50여 년 가까이 꾸준한 창작 활동을 이어온 국내 대표 중견 작가이다. 1984년 첫 개인전 이후 서울, 도쿄, 홍콩, 상하이, 시드니, 밴쿠버, 마이애미, 뉴욕 등 세계 여러 도시에서 80회 이상의 개인전을 개최하며 국제적인 활동을 이어왔다. 특히 2010년에는 도쿄, 오사카, 후쿠오카, 삿포로, 고베 등 일본 주요 도시의 갤러리를 순회 전시하며 글로벌 작가로서의 입지를 더욱 확고히 했다. 최근까지도 국내외에서 활발하게 개인전을 이어가고 있으며, 향후 수년간의 전시 일정 또한 예정되어 있을 만큼 왕성한 창작 활동을 지속하고 있다.

김명식 작가의 대표적인 '이스트사이드(East Side)' 시리즈는 뉴욕 체류 시절의 경험에서 시작되었다. 어느 날 지하철 창밖으로 보이던 집들이 사람의 얼굴처럼 느껴졌고, 지붕은 머리, 창문은 눈, 현관은 입처럼 보였다. 그렇게 탄생한 기하학적 집들은 단순한 건축적 형태를 넘어 인간과 공동체를 상징하게 되었다. 하얀 집은 백인, 노란 집은 아시아인, 검은 집은 흑인을 의미하며, 다양한 색의 집들은 서로 다른 인종과 문화 속에서 함께 살아가는 우리의 이웃을 은유한다.

Born in Seoul in 1949, Kim Myung-Sik is one of Korea's leading contemporary artists, whose artistic career spans more than five decades. After earning both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Chung-Ang University, he served as a university professor while continuously pursuing his artistic practice. Since his first solo exhibition in 1984, he has held more than 80 solo exhibitions in major cities around the world, including Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Vancouver, Miami, and New York. In particular, his 2010 touring exhibitions across major Japanese cities—including Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Kobe—further solidified his international reputation. He continues to maintain an active exhibition schedule both in Korea and abroad, with numerous solo exhibitions planned for the coming years.

Kim Myung Sik's renowned East Side Story series originated during his stay in New York. One day, while riding the subway to his studio, he suddenly perceived the houses passing outside the train window as human faces. Roofs became heads, windows became eyes, and doorways became mouths. From this moment emerged the geometric houses that would become the central motif of his work. These forms transcend mere architecture and come to symbolize humanity and community. White houses represent Caucasians, yellow houses represent Asians, black houses represent Africans, while houses of various other colors stand for the diversity of people and cultures that coexist within society.

His work extends beyond form and color to explore themes of coexistence, harmony, and human connection. Rather than focusing on conflict, Kim emphasizes the possibility of living together despite differences. Through vibrant colors and rhythmic repetition, his paintings convey messages of peace, unity, and hope. Combining Eastern sensibilities with elements of Western Modernism, his artistic language has resonated with audiences across Asia, North America, and Australia for decades, consistently communicating the universal values of harmony, respect, and coexistence among people.
